Small Steps, Big Achievements: Sophia’s Transformation at Karibu Place

When Sophia* joined Karibu Place in 2018, she faced significant challenges in her life. At that time, a high level of restrictions had to be used to support her to keep her safe. Sophia would find it difficult to interact with people, she often preferred to stay in her room rather than enjoy any activities.

However, Sophia has made incredible progress since we began supporting her. She now participates in more activities, explores new experiences, and even ventures out into the local area. A significant milestone for her was a recent trip to M-Fest, a music festival in one of our homes, in the summer. Sophia has recently visited her extended family – an achievement that means a lot to her.

One of the biggest developments in Sophia’s journey has been her growing independence. Previously, she required constant physical support where a staff member would support her while she walked. In the recent months, we have observed remarkable changes. Sophia has started choosing to walk unsupported when she feels confident with a trusted staff member by her side. She now independently walks from her flat to the kitchen and back, and more recently, she has even walked short distances outside without assistance. These may seem like small steps, yet for Sophia, they are huge achievements.

Sophia’s increasing confidence and independence are evidence of the dedication and support from the entire Karibu Place team and, most importantly, her resilience and determination.
