Disability History Month, an awareness month in the UK that started in 1992, takes place from 14 November to 20 December. This month provides a valuable opportunity to celebrate the history of disability rights and progress. This year’s theme, “Disability Livelihood and Employment,” focuses on understanding the contributions of disabled individuals in the workforce. It’s a time to reflect on the strides made in creating inclusive workplaces and acknowledge the ongoing work needed to provide greater opportunities for people with disabilities.
In recognition of this important period, we are proud to share Lia’s story below.
Meet Lia
Lia, a person we support from Lucas House, is an avid reader who spends her free time immersed in the world of fantasy and young adult fiction. When not turning the pages of a captivating novel, she enjoys relaxing in coffee shops, socialising with friends and family, and catching up with her favourite TV shows.
Reflecting on her most cherished moments this year, Lia recalls two special visits to the zoo, where she marvelled at the donkeys, elephants, and pigs.
Lia’s Work Experience
Growing up, Lia aspired to be a super spy or an intelligence analyst, drawn by the mysteries and excitement such roles promised. Although her path took a different turn, she gained valuable experience working as an admin at a GP surgery and now thrives in two fulfilling roles: volunteering at a museum café and working at a community-centred free bookstore.
Lucas House has played a pivotal role in Lia’s journey, providing her with the resources and encouragement she needs to thrive in her work and personal life. At the café, where she volunteers 3 hours a week, Lia serves customers, manages the till, and makes coffee. In her role at the bookstore, where she spends one day a week, she assists with serving customers, organising the book collection, and recording visitor numbers. Each task reinforces her skills and sense of purpose.
Skills, Growth, and Impact
Lia has picked up a variety of valuable skills through her roles, from operating a barista machine and managing a till to enhancing her organisational abilities. Beyond work, these skills have enabled Lia to take on more responsibilities at home and engage more confidently in social activities. When discussing the impact of her work, Lia highlights each part of her role as a favourite aspect, noting how it has boosted her confidence and sense of independence. This growth is nurtured by her supportive and welcoming team, who help her feel a sense of purpose and accomplishment after each shift.
Advice to Others
Lia encourages anyone considering work to take the leap, saying, “Go for it! You’ll learn new skills and be proud of yourselves.”
The Importance of Inclusion
Lia’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusive employment practices. As she continues to grow and thrive, her story serves as an inspiration for others and highlights the broader significance of Disability History Month: recognising and celebrating the contributions and potential of individuals with disabilities in the workforce.
