When partnerships make a real difference in people’s lives
We’re incredibly grateful to David and his family for allowing us to share his journey. David’s story of growing independence with Liaise is one of determination, creativity, and new experiences. After many years of living with restrictions, David has taken inspiring steps towards a fuller, more adventurous life.
David moved into Marika House, near Southampton, in 2014 after spending time in a hospital setting. Life had been shaped by limitations, and it was understandable that David felt unsure about leaving the familiarity of home. For a long while, staying indoors felt safer than facing new environments.
Over time, the team at Marika House worked alongside David to build confidence and everyday independence. Gradually, he began to enjoy more freedom in his routines and experiences, a key part of his journey of growing independence with Liaise.
Growing Independence with Liaise: From Home Comforts to Holiday Adventures
This year marked a huge milestone. For the first time as an adult, David went on holiday.
The idea of staying away from home overnight had always felt daunting. When work was needed at his bungalow, the team came up with a creative solution, arranging for David to stay in a borrowed caravan brought on-site. This gentle step away from his usual environment helped him feel more comfortable with change.
David enjoyed the experience so much that it opened the door to something even bigger: his first proper holiday in the scenic New Forest.
Surrounded by nature, David embraced long walks, delicious meals, and even relaxed in a hot tub, taking in the peaceful forest setting. It was a far cry from the restrictions of earlier years and a powerful example of what’s possible through growing independence with Liaise.
Sarah, David’s family advocate, shared:
“We were so happy about David’s holiday. He’s got a fantastic team who thought creatively about how to achieve this goal and made it happen. It means so much to know they wanted to go that extra mile for him. It’s a real achievement for David too, being in a different environment and not just coping, but very clearly enjoying it.”
