Liam’s Breakthrough: How Care and Support Transformed His Life

Since joining Langbury House in May 2019, Liam has faced numerous challenges, but the dedication of our team has transformed his experience and well-being. Initially, Liam’s journey was marked by some difficulties and despite various interventions, Liam’s happiness seemed elusive until he was diagnosed with autism in 2021. 

In response to Liam’s needs, a private psychologist worked with our Langbury House staff to develop a positive behaviour plan (PBP). Although progress was made, Liam continued to struggle with discomfort in his previous wheelchair, which led to frustration and frequent outbursts. 

A significant turning point came when we introduced a new wheelchair tailored to Liam’s preferences and needs. Despite the initial improvements, Liam continued to experience discomfort, especially with the straps on his chair. Recognising the need for further adjustments, we worked on increasing his free time out of the wheelchair and provided opportunities for him to enjoy his favourite activities. 

We also explored Liam’s medication, which revealed side effects that significantly impacted his behaviour and mental health. After several consultations and an adjustment to his medication, Liam’s mood and happiness improved greatly – he became more responsive and engaged. His newfound comfort and control over his environment were evident in his interactions and his ability to use his communication device more effectively. 

Liam’s improved well-being opened new doors for him. With the team’s support, he expressed a desire to visit Disneyland Paris, a dream that we made a reality. This trip was a testament to Liam’s progress and the positive impact of his enhanced routine and environment. One of the most impactful changes was the introduction of the Comfiture Chair. This chair provided Liam with a new level of freedom and comfort at home, allowing him to engage in activities such as watching TV without feeling confined by his wheelchair. For Liam, who has autism, the Comfiture Chair has become an essential part of his routine, offering him a sense of liberation and reducing his feelings of being trapped. 

Additionally, we are actively working towards adding padded footrests to Liam’s wheelchair. This development aims to eventually remove the restrictive straps, providing him with greater mobility and reducing the risk of injury while travelling. 

Liam’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of dedication and teamwork. By listening to Liam’s needs, adjusting his care plan, and providing a supportive environment, our team at Langbury House has been able to help Liam thrive. We are committed to continuing this journey with him, ensuring that his quality of life remains at the heart of our efforts.
