Supporting Independence With A New Car

For Alan*, a person we support in Peterborough Road, getting out and about has always been something he enjoys, especially going on long walks. But there were limits. Staff would plan fun trips and activities, but things could quickly get complicated if the destination wasn’t within walking distance. They often had to work around school pick-up times or traffic, and when that wasn’t possible, they relied on taxis.

Relying on cabs was not only expensive but also frustrating. Alan found it especially hard to wait around after finishing an activity. Once he’s done, he likes to head straight home, and waiting around for taxis often makes outings more stressful than enjoyable.

The idea of having his car wasn’t just about convenience; it was about comfort and freedom. Alan loves being in a car, not only to get from A to B, but simply to sit, listen to music, and relax. It’s soothing for him. It helps him feel calm, centred, and in control.

Now, with his car, Alan’s world has opened up. He can travel to places that were previously too far to walk. He can visit his parents and other family members more often, go shopping with staff, and explore areas that were once out of reach. Whether it’s a quick drive to a familiar place or a quiet moment with music in his parked car, the benefits are deeply felt.

More than anything, having a car has given Alan greater independence. There’s no longer a need to rely on taxis or adjust plans around traffic. This one change has brought him more control, less stress, and a better quality of life.

For Alan, his car is more than just transport – it’s a gateway to freedom, peace, and a more connected daily experience.
