Matthew’s First Steps Towards Employment with Liaise

We’re thankful to Matthew for allowing us to share his journey. Matthew’s story of taking his first steps towards employment is one of hope, growth, and new opportunities.

Taking the First Steps Towards Employment

Matthew has always wanted a role where he could contribute to the community and feel proud of his achievements. Until recently, a lack of confidence had held him back from pursuing employment. With encouragement from his mum and guidance from the team at Knoll House, Matthew took a significant step forward: applying for a part-time role at Mencap’s Community Hub.

This wasn’t just a job application; it was a milestone in Matthew’s first steps towards employment. It marked the beginning of his journey toward independence, community engagement, and skill development. At first, he felt nervous about the process, but with patient coaching from our staff, Matthew built confidence in identifying his strengths, practising interview techniques, and understanding what the role would involve.

Interview Success and Learning Opportunities

His efforts paid off. Matthew was invited to interview, a clear recognition of his potential and progress. On the day, he approached the panel with calm determination, communicated his skills effectively, and made a strong impression. Although he wasn’t offered the role this time, Mencap praised his performance and encouraged him to stay involved, offering opportunities for future volunteering.

Skills, Confidence, and the Next Steps

Most importantly, Matthew now sees himself as capable of achieving his employment goals. This experience has equipped him with practical skills in communication, self-presentation, and resilience. It has also sparked renewed motivation to pursue both paid and voluntary roles. With ongoing guidance and growing self-belief, Matthew is already preparing his next applications, each one a step further in his first steps towards employment.
