DL thriving through community and choice at PHAB Club, participating in activities and building confidence

Darren’s Story: Thriving Through Community and Choice

Darren is a young gentleman from one of our residential homes in the South East who is known for his vibrant personality and infectious enthusiasm. He is often the life and soul of any gathering and has a strong love for music, activities, and meeting new people. To ensure his social, emotional, and developmental needs continued to be met, staff supported him to broaden his horizons and access new opportunities within the community.

Through this process, staff identified PHAB Club, a national organisation supported by volunteers with clubhouses across the country. Darren joined the club last year and has since had a hugely positive experience. He has taken part in a wide range of meaningful activities, including a day at Lodge Hill activity centre, where he challenged himself with archery, walking, and rifle shooting. He also enjoyed a day in Portsmouth on a power boat, where he was thrilled to not only take part but steer the boat himself. In addition, DL has attended discos, completed a six‑week activity course, and participated in the club’s awards ceremony.

Recognition and Achievement

Darren’s commitment and enthusiasm did not go unnoticed. At the award ceremony, he was proudly presented with a trophy for “Most Spirited Member.” This achievement reflects his confidence, positive attitude, and willingness to engage fully in new experiences. DL continues to look forward to future opportunities, including an upcoming three-day course at Lodge Hill in May, alongside many other planned events. On some occasions, he is joined by his housemates, supporting shared experiences and strengthening relationships.

Meaningful Community Involvement

Overall, Darren’s involvement with the PHAB Club has supported a wide range of positive outcomes. He is actively accessing the community, building confidence, developing new skills, forming meaningful social connections, and experiencing a strong sense of belonging and achievement. His journey highlights the impact of tailored, interest-led support in promoting inclusion, independence, and emotional well-being.
