Celebrating Progress: Lia’s Journey to Independence

Lia, who has autism and mental health needs, lives at Lucas House, our specialist supported living home in High Wycombe. She moved into Lucas House in February 2024 after three years in a restrictive hospital placement. Supported living has worked really well for Lia; her independence has grown, and she’s making the most of her new life!

Lia shared some of her favourite aspects of living at Lucas House:

Freedom

I now have control over my life. I can go out when I want to, shower when I want to, choose what I want to eat, and see my family more.”

Being part of the community

I love going to coffee shops for lattes, swimming twice a week, and I’ve set a goal to complete 10,000 steps per day. I’ve managed to do this for five days.”

Making a contribution

I have a volunteering job at a cafe in a museum twice a week, where I take orders, make drinks, and do the washing up, which I really enjoy.”

Lia has also been working closely with our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Team to co-produce her own PBS plan. Co-production involves people in the planning and decision-making that affects their lives. Positive Behaviour Support, at the heart of our approach, looks at the root causes of behaviour and promotes positive change to improve the quality of life. PBS plans help both the individual and their support team work together effectively.

We asked Lia how she felt about co-producing her PBS Plan. She shared, “It feels good. It means staff can better understand me as I have said what I need support with.” This involvement ensures Lia’s voice is heard, and her needs are met in a way that respects her autonomy and preferences. Lia added, “I feel very supported. Writing my support plans means staff know how to look after me, and this means better care.”

Lia’s incredible progress in just five months highlights the importance of co-production, the right support, alongside Lia’s amazing determination. We can’t wait to see what’s next for Lia on her journey.
