What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred approach to support that places the individual at the centre of all goals and decision-making. It aims to improve the quality of life for the individual and their friends, family and wider support network.

PBS recognises that challenging behaviours are often the result of being unable to communicate an unmet need or want. People who have their basic needs met are less likely to display challenging behaviour.

A PBS framework seeks to uncover the reasons for a person’s distress, rather than focusing on the behaviour. In this way, PBS is positive and proactive. Once the triggers for challenging behaviour are identified, support strategies uniquely tailored to the individual can be put in place.

The Benefits of Positive Behaviour Support

PBS can be used for a range of individuals with different needs. It does this through teaching positive, constructive ways of managing challenging behaviour, rather than focusing on restrictive practices.

Traditional approaches to support focus on the individual’s behaviour. Positive Behaviour Support is a holistic approach to support that considers the person as a whole and looks at their personal history, emotional needs and physical health.

PBS allows a person who displays challenging behaviour to develop healthier ways to express themselves and manage their feelings. This will make them safer and happier, which in turn will improve conditions for their family and support workers.

PBS approaches are based on a set of values enabling inclusion, choice, participation and equality of opportunity. By better understanding people’s needs, PBS seeks to enhance their quality of life and provide them with better support.

Our Approach to Support

At Liaise, our specialist multidisciplinary teams draw on several positive and proactive strategies to reduce stress and anxiety whilst always maintaining dignity and respect for the people we support.

Our staff teams and registered managers are specialists in supporting people with complex behaviour. We provide all our staff with an intensive training programme based on our years of experience and the latest research-based strategies for supporting complex needs.

We recognise that there are many reasons why a person might display complex behaviour. That’s why we create individual support plans tailored to the unique personality of each person we support.

Guided by the principles of ‘person-centredness’, our goal is to provide support that is based on the specific needs, desires and ambitions of each person. By working closely in partnership with the people we support, we arrive at solutions designed to achieve positive outcomes and help people achieve their personal goals.

Throughout our work, we aim to:

  • Develop behaviour support programmes tailored to each individual
  • Identify and reduce triggers for challenging behaviour
  • Help people develop healthier ways to express themselves and manage their feelings
  • Continually monitor and evaluate our support programmes to ensure they are meeting expectations and outcomes
